La Dolce Birra? Trying Birra Moretti Zero So You Don’t Have To

Manufacturer Description

“Birra Moretti Zero is brewed with Italian passion and the finest quality ingredients. Perfectly balanced with fresh, hoppy and citrus notes; its flavour is loved by many and it’s the perfect match for any meal..”

About Birra Moretti Zero

Founded in 1859 by Luigi Moretti in Udine (then part of the Austrian Empire), Birra Moretti has a long history. Originally called the Beer and Ice Factory, the company remained family-owned until the late 1980s before being finally acquired by Dutch brewing giant Heineken in 1996.

In 2024, Birra Moretti became the UK’s best-selling draught lager. Its alcohol-free version, Birra Moretti Zero, was launched in the UK in 2019, following the earlier release of Heineken 0.0.

While the exact brewing method isn’t confirmed, it’s likely made in the traditional way—with water, barley malt, hops, and yeast—but using a specific process to prevent fermentation and keep the alcohol content at just 0.05%

The Premise of the Review

When I first started exploring alcohol-free beers, I compared them directly with their alcoholic counterparts. But now, I feel confident enough to judge them on their own merits.

For this review, I’m scoring Birra Moretti Zero based on three key attributes:

  1. Aroma
  2. Appearance
  3. Drinkability

Tasting Notes

Aroma

There’s a subtle hoppiness to the aroma, though it’s slightly on the sweet side—perhaps even a little too sweet for some.

Appearance

Pouring it revealed a lovely head and a gentle fizz. The amber hue is inviting and visually appealing.

Taste

Smooth, subtle, and refreshing. There’s a pleasant carbonation that enhances the overall drinking experience. A noticeable sweetness lingers in the aftertaste—not overpowering, but definitely present.

Verdict

I really enjoyed this beer. In fact, it’s the first alcohol-free lager I’ve tried that had me immediately reaching for a second.

Over Easter, I brought a four-pack to my parents’ house since I was driving. I ended up thoroughly enjoying every bottle. That said, some people might find the sweetness a bit much after a couple, but I didn’t mind it.

In Summary

A solid, easy-drinking alcohol-free option.
