Uiltje Bird of Prey 0.2% Review – A Hop-Forward Alcohol-Free IPA

About Uiltje Brewing Company

Uiltje Brewing Company is a Dutch craft brewery based in Haarlem. Founded in 2012 by brewer Robbert Uyleman, the brewery quickly gained attention for its bold, hop-forward beers and playful branding.

After starting out as a contract brewery, Uiltje opened its own brewing facility in Haarlem’s Waarderpolder in 2016. Since then, it has built a reputation for experimental brewing, frequent new releases and distinctive cans featuring its now-iconic cartoon owl artwork. In 2021, the brewery became part of Swinkels Family Brewers, helping expand its distribution while maintaining its creative craft brewing approach.

Introducing Bird of Prey IPA

Bird of Prey IPA is one of Uiltje’s flagship beers and a great example of the brewery’s hop-driven style. Known for its bright, punchy hop character, the beer helped establish Uiltje’s reputation among craft beer fans both in the Netherlands and internationally.

Alongside the original IPA, the brewery also produces Bird of Prey 0.2%, a low-alcohol version designed to capture the same IPA character with almost no alcohol.

Rather than removing alcohol after brewing, this version uses specialised yeast that limits alcohol production during fermentation. The goal is to keep the refreshing, hop-forward profile of the original while fitting into the rapidly growing alcohol-free beer category..

Tasting Review: Aroma, Appearance & Drinkability

Aroma

The aroma opens with light citrus notes that immediately hint at the beer’s hop character. It’s fresh and inviting without being overpowering.

Appearance

Pouring the beer reveals a lively, cloudy body topped with a pleasant foamy head. It looks bright and refreshing, very much in line with what you’d expect from a modern IPA-style beer.

Taste & Mouthfeel

The flavour leans strongly into its hop profile, with grapefruit notes standing out in particular. Interestingly, the grapefruit character brings both bitterness and a subtle sweetness that balance each other nicely.

There’s a pleasant density to the beer which coats the mouth well, while a good level of carbonation adds a crisp bite that keeps the beer refreshing and easy to drink.

Verdict

I was originally drawn in by the fun design of the can, but the beer itself didn’t disappoint.

Bird of Prey 0.2% manages to combine refreshing drinkability with a satisfying hop character, delivering a surprisingly flavourful alcohol-free IPA.
