BrewDog Wingman AF Review: A Light and Refreshing Alcohol-Free Session IPA
Manufacturer Description
“The best Wingman keeps you flying high without the crash-landing. This alcohol-free beer brings all the altitude of our maverick session IPA, minus the alcohol, so you can stay sharp and wake up refreshed” – Brewdog.
About BrewDog
Founded in 2007 by James Watt and Martin Dickie, BrewDog is a well-known Scottish brewery based in Ellon, Aberdeenshire. The brand has grown into one of Europe’s leading craft brewers, known for bold marketing, experimental beer styles, and a growing range of alcohol-free offerings.
The company claims to be the “#1 Craft Brewer in Europe,” though this hasn’t been independently verified. What’s undeniable is their expanding portfolio from flagship beers like Punk IPA to innovative alcohol-free creations like Hazy AF and now, Wingman AF.
Introducing Wingman AF: A Session IPA Without the Buzz
Wingman AF is the alcohol-free counterpart to BrewDog’s Wingman Session IPA, first launched in 2023. The AF version followed in 2024, aimed at drinkers seeking the flavour of a session IPA with none of the alcohol.
Wingman was developed to fill a gap in BrewDog’s lineup perhaps as a response to the popularity of Beavertown’s Neck Oil, a well-loved UK session IPA.
So, what is a session IPA? Simply put, it’s a hop-forward beer with lower alcohol content (typically under 5%), designed for easier drinking over longer sessions and now adapted for the alcohol-free crowd.
Tasting Review: Aroma, Appearance & Drinkability
Aroma
There’s not much on the nose just a faint citrusy note if you try hard enough. A little underwhelming.
Appearance
Wingman AF pours a pale yellow with a light head that quickly disappears. Visually, it looks a bit flat in the glass.
Taste & Mouthfeel
The flavour is light and refreshing, but lacks depth. It comes across slightly watery. That said, the carbonation is spot-on, giving it a nice fizzy mouthfeel. There’s also no lingering aftertaste, which adds to its clean finish.
Verdict: Good for a Hot Day, But Not a Standout
Though I’ve enjoyed BrewDog’s beers for years, I hadn’t tried the original Wingman, so Wingman AF was a fresh experience for me. Unfortunately, it doesn’t hit the mark like Hazy AF does.
While refreshing and easy to drink, I found the beer a little too thin and lacking in complexity. Still, it might be a solid option on a warm summer day, especially if you’re after something crisp and alcohol-free.
