Nirvana Helles Lager (0.3%) Review – A Crisp Alcohol-Free Bavarian Style Lager

Founded in London in 2016, Nirvana Brewery has established itself as one of the UK’s pioneers of dedicated alcohol-free brewing. Rather than adapting existing beers by removing the alcohol, Nirvana has focused from the outset on creating flavour-first beers designed to stand on their own, drawing inspiration from classic brewing traditions while embracing modern alcohol-free techniques.

One of the brewery’s core offerings is Nirvana Helles Lager, a German-inspired take on the traditional Munich-style lager. Brewed with classic lager ingredients and aiming to capture the clean, crisp character associated with the style, it’s a beer that reflects Nirvana’s philosophy of producing alcohol-free options without compromising on authenticity. Let’s see how it measures up.

My Review: First Sip Impressions

Aroma

A fresh, inviting aroma greets you as soon as the can is opened. There’s a pleasant hoppy character backed by gentle cereal malt notes and just a hint of sweetness. It smells clean, crisp and very much in keeping with the traditional Helles style.

Appearance

The beer pours a bright golden colour with a good white head that lingers surprisingly well. At first glance it appears slightly subdued, but don’t let that fool you it looks clean and refreshing, exactly what you’d hope for from a Bavarian-inspired lager.

Taste & Mouthfeel

The first sip delivers a rich, malty backbone balanced nicely by floral hop bitterness. It has more body than many alcohol-free lagers, giving it a satisfying mouthfeel that coats the palate without becoming heavy.

My initial impression from the appearance was that the beer might lack carbonation, but that proved completely wrong. There’s a lively fizz that lifts the flavours and adds a refreshing finish, making it an easy beer to keep coming back to.

Verdict

Nirvana Helles Lager is an excellent example of just how far alcohol-free brewing has come. It delivers genuine lager character, a surprisingly full body and plenty of flavour without feeling like a compromise.

The biggest compliment I can give it is that, if I hadn’t known it was only 0.3% ABV, I could easily have mistaken it for a regular craft lager. Whether you’re cutting back on alcohol or simply looking for a quality alcohol-free option, this is one that’s well worth seeking out.
