Basqueland Brewing started out in Spain’s Basque Country back in 2015 and quickly built a name for bold, modern craft beer. Based near San Sebastián, the brewery became known for juicy IPAs, big hop character, and colourful, contemporary branding the kind of beers that helped put Spanish craft brewing on the wider European map. Their lineup leans heavily into hazy, hop-forward styles inspired by the American craft scene, but with a distinctly Basqueland feel: relaxed, creative, and flavour-first.

That same attitude carries into Hero Hazy IPA AF, the brewery’s alcohol-free IPA. Instead of going down the route of a thin or overly sweet AF beer, Basqueland aimed to make something that still felt like one of their regular hazy IPAs. Brewed with Vic Secret and Cashmere Cryo hops, Hero focuses on soft tropical fruit flavours, citrus, and that smooth hazy texture modern IPA fans look for just without the alcohol.

Aroma

Hero opens with a light but inviting aroma. Tropical fruit comes through first, with hints of mango, peach, and citrus backed up by a soft grassy hoppiness. It’s not an aggressively aromatic IPA, but there’s enough going on to give it that modern hazy IPA feel without becoming overpowering.

Appearance

Pouring into the glass, Hero looks the part straight away. It’s bright, hazy, and lively with a golden-orange colour that feels very true to style. The carbonation initially looks energetic, although the head fades fairly quickly after pouring. Even so, it still has that fresh, juicy appearance you want from a hazy IPA.

Taste & Mouthfeel

The flavour leans towards soft tropical fruit and citrus, with gentle hop bitterness sitting in the background. Mango, orange, and a touch of peach come through nicely, giving the beer an easy-going and refreshing character.

Where Hero slightly falls short is intensity. The flavours are pleasant and balanced, but they never fully burst into life in the way some of the best alcohol-free hazy IPAs do. The carbonation also drops away a little too quickly, leaving the mouthfeel softer and flatter than expected by the end of the glass.

Still, what Hero does well is drinkability. It’s smooth, approachable, and easy to enjoy, especially if you prefer hazy IPAs that are more relaxed and sessionable rather than overly bitter or heavy.

Verdict

Basqueland’s Hero Hazy IPA AF feels very much like a modern craft brewery applying its hazy IPA expertise to the alcohol-free world. It looks great in the glass, delivers enjoyable tropical hop character, and avoids the overly sweet profile that can sometimes affect AF beers.

While it could benefit from a little more punch and longer-lasting carbonation, Hero remains a refreshing and easy-drinking alcohol-free IPA that feels crafted with care rather than treated as an afterthought. For fans of softer, juicy hazy IPAs, it’s a solid and approachable option.
