Big Drop Pine Trail Pale Ale Review | A Refreshing Alcohol-Free Pale Ale?
Big Drop Brewing has been one of the pioneers of the modern alcohol-free beer movement since launching in 2016. Rather than adapting traditional beers by removing the alcohol, the brewery set out with a different goal: to create full-flavoured craft beers that just happen to be alcohol-free. That approach has earned the brewery numerous international awards and helped establish it as one of the best-known names in alcohol-free craft beer.
Pine Trail Pale Ale is Big Drop’s take on a classic American-style pale ale. Brewed with Magnum, Mosaic and Amarillo hops, it combines a malt backbone with a hop-forward profile inspired by traditional US craft brewing. At under 0.5% ABV, it’s designed to offer the familiar characteristics of the style while remaining alcohol-free, making it a popular choice within the brewery’s core range.
Tasting Review: Aroma, Appearance & Drinkability
Aroma
Pine Trail opens with an inviting aroma of fresh citrus and tropical fruit, backed up by floral hop notes and a gentle malt sweetness. There’s a pleasant freshness on the nose that immediately lets you know this is aiming to be a classic American-style pale ale rather than trying to imitate a lager.
Appearance
Pouring a clear golden amber with a lively stream of carbonation, Pine Trail develops a generous white head that lingers well. It looks exactly how you’d expect a refreshing pale ale to look and certainly encourages that first sip.
Taste & Mouthfeel
The flavour is well balanced from the outset, combining light biscuit malt with bright citrus hop character and a subtle floral bitterness. There’s enough complexity to keep things interesting without becoming overly bitter, making it approachable for both craft beer fans and those newer to alcohol-free pale ales.
Carbonation is crisp and lively, giving the beer a refreshing, easy-drinking character that’s perfect for warmer days or pairing with food. The finish is clean with a gentle lingering hop bitterness. My only minor criticism is that the body feels a touch thin at times, giving the beer a slight watery quality that stops it feeling quite as full as its alcoholic counterparts.

Verdict
Having previously enjoyed Big Drop’s Poolside DDH IPA, I was keen to see how Pine Trail compared. Thankfully, it continues the brewery’s reputation for producing well-crafted alcohol-free beers.
Pine Trail doesn’t try to overwhelm you with huge hop flavours. Instead, it delivers a balanced, refreshing pale ale with enough malt and hop character to feel satisfying while remaining incredibly easy to drink. It’s the sort of beer you could happily enjoy after work, with a barbecue, or simply when you’re looking for something flavourful without the alcohol.
While the body could be slightly fuller, that’s a small criticism in what is otherwise a very enjoyable alcohol-free pale ale. If you’re looking to explore the growing world of alcohol-free craft beer, Big Drop Pine Trail deserves a place on your shopping list.
