La Chouffe 0.4% Blonde Review – A Belgian Classic Goes Alcohol-Free

Tucked away in the forests of the Belgian Ardennes, Brasserie d’Achouffe has one of those origin stories that feels almost too charming to be true. Founded in the late 1970s by brothers-in-law Pierre Gobron and Christian Bauweraerts, the brewery began as a hobby project, brewing tiny 49-litre batches back in 1982.

What started as a passion experiment quickly grew into a globally recognised Belgian beer brand, helped along by its iconic gnome mascot and a flagship blonde ale that became a cult favourite. Now part of the Duvel Moortgat family, the brewery still leans into that original Ardennes identity rustic, playful, and rooted in traditional Belgian brewing.

In recent years, Chouffe has embraced the low- and no-alcohol movement with its 0.4% Blonde. The aim? To capture the essence of its classic strong blonde without the heavy ABV. And to be fair, it does a pretty good job.

Pouring a rich golden colour with a soft, foamy head, it immediately looks the part. On the nose, you’ll pick up light hoppiness with a gentle fruitiness nothing overpowering, but enough to hint at that classic Belgian profile.

Take a sip and you get a balanced mix of malt, spice, and subtle fruit, backed up by a light bitterness. It’s refreshing, easy-drinking, and has a surprisingly full mouthfeel for a low-ABV beer. The carbonation is well judged too, giving it a bit of life without being overly fizzy.

That said, if you’re used to traditional Belgian blondes, you might notice it lacks a bit of punch. The flavour is there, but slightly dialled back. Still, for a 0.4% beer, it holds its own and delivers a solid alcohol-free alternative.

Final Thoughts

After previously trying alcohol-free takes on darker Belgian styles, I was keen to see how a blonde would stack up and overall, this is a solid effort.

It’s refreshing, well-balanced, and keeps enough of that classic Belgian character to feel authentic. If you’re after a lighter option without completely sacrificing flavour, this is definitely worth a try.

For me, it just needs a bit more punch to really stand out—but as alcohol-free beers go, it’s a strong contender.
